Food Freedom and Intentional Weight Loss

I spent years trying to achieve food freedom and weight loss at the same time.

I realized a long time ago that:

  1. Whatever I did to lose weight, I would have to be able to maintain it for the rest of my life in order to keep the weight off.
  2. If I wanted to have a good relationship with food, then I needed to speak kindly about food… All kinds of food.

So, when I embarked on my “lifestyle change” (that I figured was going to change my life forever and keep me thin for good), I did so in a very flexible and sustainable way. No foods were off-limits, as long as they fit in my calories.

This worked wonderfully-until it didn’t. Suddenly I was struggling with more and more urges to binge. This eventually ended up turning into a full-blown binge eating disorder. 

Feeling desperate, I would stay up at night googling things like:

“How to quit binge eating” 

“How to achieve a healthy & normal relationship with food”

“Achieving food freedom for good”

Pretty much everything that I came across was still weight loss-focused. And anything that wasn’t, I just clicked past because I wasn’t interested in anything that wasn’t ultimately going to help me lose weight. 

Something that I’ve found, which made a lot of sense, was to change my language around food. To no longer call foods “good” or “bad”. To no longer refer to me as “good” or “bad” for eating certain foods. I made the switch in language and it felt good, but I was still struggling with urges to binge eat.

Then, I found an article about overcoming binge eating that was saying to focus on eating more nutrient-rich foods. Okay, seems simple enough, right? Yeah, but nutrient-rich foods aren’t the foods that I crave and that I typically binge eat so… that didn’t really work in the long run. 

All these things, in theory, worked really well and I did feel like I had figured it out. I had figured out how to continue to lose weight AND also have freedom and peace with food. I felt like I had this figured out so well, in fact, that I created a “Food Freedom Weight Loss Program”.

* Insert large eye roll here and a formal apology for the damage I may have unknowingly caused while I was deep in diet culture, my friends!*

In this program, I went over all the basic food freedom things:

  • No “good” or “bad” foods.
  • Focus on eating more nutrient-rich foods.
  • If you want a less nutritious food then just allow yourself a little bit of it and eat it very slowly to enjoy it more (we are still trying to lose weight after all!).
  • All foods fit (within reason, because once again, we still want to lose weight).

I then also taught things like:

  • Intermittent fasting (because if you condense the period of the day that you are eating in then you will, in theory, eat less).
  • Eating super slowly (because the slower you eat, the less you might eat).
  • Weekly weigh-ins (to keep up with progress and be able to notice if you need to tweak something).
  • Calorie counting (since weight loss *basically* comes down to calories in VS calories out – although it’s not quite that simple, which is something I wrote about in this post HERE).
  • Flexible keto lifestyle (because we don’t want any big restrictions and all foods fit, but if you eat high fat then you will be more satiated and eat less – in theory!)

The truth was that I was still struggling. 

I created this Food Freedom Weight Loss program promising to help people achieve food freedom AND lose weight. In reality, I myself still truly had not achieved food freedom. I also want to point out that I was actually doing keto at the time I created this program. That makes it even more absurd! 

Now that I am at a place where I no longer struggle with food at all (and I haven’t for years anymore), what finally worked? No longer worrying about weight.

There is no food freedom for a person who is concerned about trying to lose weight. 

This may seem like a bold claim, but I will stand by it. Hear me out here.

As long as you’re concerned with trying to lose weight, that’s your ultimate focus and goal. It doesn’t matter how hard you try to neutralize your language around food and trick yourself into thinking you can eat what you want. You ultimately are still always judging your food choices by how they may affect that number on the scale. As long as you’re doing this, true freedom around food is unattainable.

The true shift to food freedom comes from the decision to stop worrying too much about the number on the scale and the size of your pants. 

True food freedom comes from being able to really feed yourself in a way that you enjoy, that’s pleasurable and feels good for you.
